History of Love INC

Love in the Name of Christ (Love INC) was established in Lewis County in March 1990. A pastor who was familiar with the work of LOVE INC PIC 5the ministry relocated to Centralia and interested five other churches to form a local affiliate. By-laws were written, Articles of Incorporation filed, and a 501(c)3 designation applied for and received.

Originally serving only the western part of Lewis County, the ministry expanded to include the entire county in 2002; subsequently, in 2005, the southern part of Thurston County (Rochester, Oakville, Tenino and Bucoda) was added.

During the early years of the ministry, space was provided at no cost by various churches. From this tiny beginning with one part-time person, limited hours and a cell phone, the ministry began to assist those in need. For more information, visit our How We Help page.

Over the years, as the ministry grew, the staff was gradually expanded to include five part-time employees and the hours of operation increased to five days/week. Space became a problem. In the beginning no warehouse was available for storage of furniture. Lists were kept of people and items of furniture to be donated; when a call came in with a need, Love INC would confirm that the furniture was still available and then connect the donor with the person in need. While the system worked well in most cases, there were a small number of situations where the furniture actually should have gone to the dump. In these situations, both parties were upset. Initially firewood was stored at the home of one of Love INC’s employees. The location was inconvenient and resulted in people arriving at all hours to pick up firewood. While we could control when they were told to go for wood, we had no control over when they actually arrived.

Something had to change. In early 2003, the Board decided that these two growing ministries needed to continue and that Love INC had to assume control over the quality and quantity of the furniture and find a place to store the firewood which would be located centrally.

In October 2003, the Board took a step of faith and rented a three-bedroom house in Chehalis, Washington. This houses our offices and a large living/conference room.

A 2,500 square foot metal building serves as our storehouse for the furniture ministry. A 30’x30′ covered area on the west end of the building serves as a covering for the firewood.

In October 2009, Love INC successfully completed a capital campaign, raising $140,000 to purchase the rented property. In 2010, an additional $17,700 was raised to increase the warehouse space from 1,500 to 2,500 square feet. $5,700 of these funds came from a generous grant from the Boeing Employees Community Fund.

The first Love INC affiliate was located in Holland, Michigan in 1977. Today the movement has spread from coast to coast and north to Alaska. There are currently more than 160 affiliates in the United States and several Love INC affiliates in formation in Africa. The National Office of Love in the Name of Christ is in St. Paul, MN. It has a full Board of Directors, as well as a network of Regional Trainers, to help individual affiliates. Extensive training, materials, and a National conference assist local affiliates.
